Cincinnati for Darfur |

| Homa Yavar Homa Yavar is the co-chair of the Greater Cincinnati Advocates for Darfur. She does great work for this organization. She has given many speeches to high school students and college students. She educates people about the history of Darfur and the current conflict in Darfur. She has collaborated with others like Nick Clooney to help spread the word about the tragedies in Darfur. Nick Clooney Nick Clooney is a famous television journalist, anchorman, and politician from the Cincinnati area. Of course, he is also George Clooney’s father, but he has put his power to good use. Clooney became a strong activist for Darfur after visiting the Sudan. He has talked at many high schools in both Ohio and Kentucky. He has participated in many other events and rallies for Darfur. He has also spoken at local colleges and universities urging students to share their time and get involved to help make Darfur a better place. LaSalle, Roger Bacon, and Walnut Hills High Schools These high schools are all located in the Cincinnati area, and each has active Amnesty International chapters. Through Amnesty International these students have been working for a change in Darfur. They have learned about Darfur’s history, the current situation there, and recent news. These motivated high school students then send many letters to various members of the Congress and the Senate. These students have also organized events to benefit the citizens of Darfur. In March 2007, the students from LaSalle and Roger Bacon along with students from Mother of Mercy High School organized a 30 Hour Famine to raise money for and awareness about the people of Darfur Who we are We, the members of the Honors English 102 class at the University of Cincinnati, decided to create this website to help raise awareness about Darfur in a unique way. Much of our time spent in this coure was studying past genocides and the current situation in Darfur. We watched and discussed the movie Hotel Rwanda. We pondered the causes and effects of and the sollutions to genocide. We also read and studied the novel A Long Way Gone and heard the author, Ishmael Beah, speak about human exploitation and genocide. We responded to everything by writing our own creative response pieces. Through all of these experiences our class became more aware of and more passionate about the crisis in Darfur. Our hope is that this website will help others become more aware of this tragedy and to provide them with the tools they need to aide in the cause for Darfur. The members of this class are Sam Anneken, Emily Cao, Jim Chen, Russ Gatermann, Chelsea Gidden, Kelsey Herrmann, Jacqueline Kruse, Cory Kunkel, Jordan Lemley, Taylor MacDonald, John Myers, Jacob Pizzo, Jon Tebbs, and Sarah Walterman. We were instructed by Mica Darley. You Anyone can become actively involved in the cause for Darfur and become a “Face of the Project”. The more people who become involved with Darfur, the better. The more people who know about what is happening to the innocent citizens of Darfur, the higher the chances of the rest of the world becoming involved are. All it takes to help out is a little of your time. You could write your own response pieces or a letter to your local congressman or senator. You could also call these leaders, voice your opinions, and tell others about what is going on in Darfur. No act is too small. Small steps must be taken initially to secure peace in Darfur, and you can easily take these steps. |
